What exactly is a ‘Kawaii Ambassador?’
Kawaii Ambassadors are appointed by the Japanese government and spread culture through cuteness. Kawaii Ambassadors mingle cuteness and culture into one. By doing so, the Ambassadors help people outside of Japan become interested in the country.
The ‘Kawaii Ambassador’ position began in 2009 through Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Japan made a shift, from mainly promoting traditional Japanese culture to Pop Culture and of course, fashion as well. Misako Aoki was one of the first Kawaii Ambassadors.
How Do They ‘Spread’ Cuteness and Culture?
Ambassadors travel throughout the world. They attend fashion meetups, conventions, and hold panels. Singers such as Pamyu even hold concerts.
Youtube has also been a resource where this cute culture can easily be accessed, with the click of a few buttons. Kawaii Pateen, a Youtube channel, features Kawaii Ambassadors. The channel features videos in Japanese, but subtitles help make the channel accessible.
Ambassadors Are not Just In japan.
Fashion model Misako Aoki has been appointing Kawaii Ambassadors from the organization Japanese Lolita Organization. (She specifically focusing on spreading Lolita Fashion). There is an application online available and people across the world have become Ambassadors , such as Mexican Lolita Daniela Michel Garcia.
