It’s time once more for another cosplayer interview! This next one, shared from Cosplay Blog with a Brain, is an interview with Deussolaris Cosplay! He’s a talented young man from Colorado, who strives to get all the details right!
What’s your cosplay alias and why did you choose it?
Deussolaris Cosplay – I’ve been using “Deussolaris” since I was a teen, mostly for gaming, but gaming has had a huge influence on me to do coplay so it was a natural choice for me. It’s a compound of Deus (God) and Solaris (pertaining to the sun) – for me it means a lot as I see the sun at the center of creation and the reason life is possible at all.
How many years have you been cosplaying and what got you started?
I made my first cosplay over 10 years ago. It was Anji Mito from Guilty Gear I made to go to Nan Desu Kan my first time. Unfortunately, I didn’t have a lot of friends who knew or understood cosplay back then so I fell out of it. I’ve only really gotten back into cosplay since 2016 so fairly new to the community from that perspective.
What has been some of your favorite things to work with when constructing costumes and why?
I absolutely have fallen in love with worbla and EVA – I used to only sew so these mediums have allowed me to take cosplay to the next level and start making props and such.
What are you excited to be working with in the future and why?
I’ve only done molds and casting once, but I thought it was really neat. I’d like to do more with that in the future so I can make better more detailed props and accessories. I also think it would be neat to get into some light effects as well.
What are some of the traits you like to see in other costumes and who do you think does well in them?
I’m all about the details. I absolutely love when cosplayers nail the details that would have otherwise been overlooked. I also really enjoy when cosplayers get creative doing mash-ups or gender-benders. It’s something I haven’t done yet either so I really appreciate cosplayers that pull these off. I’m fortunate enough to have a lot of friends now that cosplay and I look up to each and every one of them.
What is your view of the “cosplay scene”?
Well it’s definitely changed since I first did it all those years ago. I think most surprising was the amount of negativity some people bring to the community. I think most cosplayers today have experienced some kind of bullying, feelings of social inadequacy, etc. – Cosplay should be an outlet and a safe place for people to express themselves and feel comfortable in their own right. There’s a lot of good people in our community, but there are some that still manage to disrupt it.
What are some of the things you want to see change in the scene?
So going back to what I said – I’d like to see more positivity and support within the community. Let’s show encouragement to those that need it, let’s be kind to one another and if anything just let people enjoy the things that they love in peace – there’s no need to hurt others or tear people down.
What is some advice you could give people starting to get into cosplay?
Start small and work your way up to harder more intricate projects. Build that confidence so that you don’t get discouraged – Your dream cosplay can wait. It goes a long way to have the confidence to take on the next challenge so just be patient. You know you’re overdoing it when you no longer are having fun making it. We do these things because we enjoy them – Don’t lose that!
What are some of your favorite conventions you’ve attended and why?
Well I’ve only been to Colorado conventions – my dream is to go to some of the larger ones like San Diego or Dragon Con. But I do really enjoy the energy at DCC – there are so many people and so much to see! Starfest was a blast; I went for the first time this year. I also managed to go back to NDK this year as a “blast from the past” kind of experience. It was great and I got to cosplay one of my favourite anime characters from my childhood with a dear friend.
Give a random fact about one of your costumes that you’re proud of!
My Nyx Ulric cosplay is basically my crown jewel. I worked almost half a year on it making sure that I made it as detailed as possible. It was actually the reason I have so many good friends in the cosplay community today. This cosplay also got me 3rd place in the Master Tier cosplay contest at DreamHack Denver in 2017.
