Cosplay Interview with Liliphae

It’s time once more for another cosplayer interview! This next one, shared from Cosplay Blog with a Brain, is an interview with Liliphae! She’s a relatively newer cosplayer from California, who loves League of Legends!

What’s your cosplay alias and why did you choose it?
Technically the “long” version of my cosplay identity is Lilith Phaedra. Lilith like the succubus (and also my name) and Phaedra for the Greek word for bright. It doesn’t really make any sense. And it was too long, so last year I shortened it to Liliphae and have been going by the shorter version ever since.

How many years have you been cosplaying and what got you started?
For some reason, people seem to think I’m a veteran cosplayer whom has been in the scene for a grand number of years. They get really surprised when I tell them I’ve only been doing this for two years. I made my debut at San Jose’s FanimeCon in 2014 as Ezreal from League of Legends because I loved the character so much and greatly enjoyed the game. League of Legends is pretty much what got me started. I think that little tidbit is the same for a lot of people though considering its popularity.

What has been some of your favorite things to work with when constructing costumes and why?
I have honestly not worked with a lot of stuff when it comes to creating my own costumes. I am not shy about telling people that I commission the things that I deem too hard to do myself, but I am finally learning a bit of the ropes. Foam and PVC has been pretty exciting!

What are you excited to be working with in the future and why?
In all honestly, I have no plans for making any new cosplays right now. I just finished three so to even think about touching new supplies makes me a bit iffy. I guess if I had to pick something though, I’d like to work more and get better with worbla.

What are some of the traits you like to see in other costumes and who do you think does well in them?
When it comes to traits, I do look for accuracy in costumes, but I also don’t at all mind if people take creative liberties with their cosplays so long as the character is still recognizable. As for who does well in them? I can’t really name any names.

What is your view of the “cosplay scene”?
The “scene” has treated me well. I don’t really pay attention to any drama that happens to occasionally appear. I just surround myself with as much positivity as I can and of course try to have fun at all the community-run events I get invited to.

What are some of the things you want to see change in the scene?
Less drama, definitely? I don’t get involved with it but I do catch glimpses every now and again. We’re all just a bunch of nerds. Don’t have time to make mountains out of molehills.

What is some advice you could give people starting to get into cosplay?
There are two rules. Follow them closely. One, your first cosplay is always going to be awful. Two, never forget that this is a hobby and you’re supposed to have fun. If you go into this with a bad attitude, you’re not going to have a good time.

What are some of your favorite conventions you’ve attended and why?
Anime Expo 2015 was pretty rad for reasons I can’t fully get into. Fanime is always good because it’s my “home” con. SacAnime Summer and Winter are some of my absolute favorites because the smaller conventions always have an air of charm about them unseen in the bigger ones. Every con is good for seeing friends though, of course!

Give a random fact about one of your costumes that you’re proud of!
I made my Kitty Cat Katarina (League of Legends) cosplay out of small Ahri (also League of Legends) tails. I cut them up and took the white fur and just covered a bandeau and a pair of panties with it. Probably one of the more creative things I’ve done to create a cosplay.
