Kyary Pamyu Pamyu – A Sugary Sweet Concert, With Half the Calories

So last Sunday, I decided to head over to the Best Buy Theater to visit friends that were in line for the Kyary Pamyu Pamyu concert in New York City.  If you’re about to say who is Kyary Pamyu Pamyu, most likely you have heard her music while walking around at cons, especially her know hit song, PONPONPON.

Before I begin, I must thank Pocky Princess Darcy and Corey for the ticket.  They had an extra one.  I had originally planned on going to the concert to film video of people standing outside and posting it online.  But things change when you’re at the right place at the right time.

So upon going in and sitting down, my first thought was that this concert was going to be wild.  I saw a lot of teenagers and young adults, so that was my first thought.  After finding seats and settling in, the show began.  Kyary came out on stage in a lovely red dress and began singing and dancing.  Instead of seeing everyone jumping around and going nuts, it was much more controlled.  I’ve been to a few concerts here and there, and even if the singer/band is in control, the crows is still going nuts.

As for her music and her style of it… I like it.  It is very reminiscent of vibrant anime music of the 90s.  The opening theme from All Purpose Cultural Cat Girl Nuku-Nuku comes to mind.  And she progressed into the rest of her songs, it was still sugary sweet, pop sounding.  But what I liked is that it wasn’t overpowering.  One of the songs, I do not remember the name of it, she went into dubstep.  But it was very classy as to how she did it, especially the dance movements.

Throughout the concert, she took the time out to talk about herself, her tour, and how excited she was to be here.  Along with her wardrobe change, there was an intermission where it went into a bit more details about her life.

I completely enjoyed her concert and I would go to it again.  I do hope that after her would tour that she makes an appearance at an anime convention for another concert.

And for those of you who were not able to go, here’s a playlist of a couple of videos  from her concert below.

Her new album, Pamyupamyu Revolution is now available for purchase as CD through CD Japan / Amazon.com and as a digital download as well.
