Nerd Dating

If you are reading this article, this possibly means that you’re an anime, cosplay, manga, or video game geek or nerd. Don’t freak out, it’s all good.  While we indulge in such geeky activities, we try to find someone of the same or opposite sex to date in our fandoms.  Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t.  It’s all part of the social game right?

I tend to think so too.

So this morning I read an article about female blogger who went out on a date.  You might be saying to yourself, “Okay, so?”  Well, this girl blogs for the tech site Gizmodo, he’s the Magic:The Gathering World Champion.

That’s right Magic: The Gathering.

He shows up dressed well for a date and casually says that he’s the champion.  Also tells her that he has a tournament this weekend.  And he also met a lot of his friends at Magic tournaments.

So, lemme get this straight… You write for a tech blog, but you ostracized him for playing Magic.  I have met tons of friends at cons.  Do you know what we talk about? Stuff we do outside of cons.  When I go out on dates or just hanging out with friends, do you know what we discuss?  Topics that are outside of conventions.  I do admit that we do discuss nerdy/geeky things, but it’s all understanable and topical.

Wow Alyssa, you’re a self-centered, shallow bitch.  As an editor of a very popular technology blog, you have some nerve to post an article like that.  That’s a slap in the face of your readers.  I hope that your children become die hard geeks and put you to shame.

I find it crazy to believe, yet sad that people that are nerdy like myself are being that selective in who we date.  I understand that we all have our red flags and standards.  But this I find, simply uncalled for

Right after I had posted this article to my personal Facebook page, a friend of mine linked me to a follow up article from GeekMom. You go Mom!

What’s your two cents on this?
